How volume conversion works
The litre (1,000 cm³) is the base unit on this page. The US customary units are all defined exactly from each other and from the metric system:
1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 US fl oz
1 cup = 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp ≈ 236.588 mL
1 fl oz = 29.5735 mL
1 m³ = 1,000 L
Litres to US gallons: divide by 3.785 (or multiply by 0.264172). Gallons to litres: multiply by 3.785. Millilitres to cups: divide by 236.588.
Kitchen volume chart
| Unit | Millilitres | Litres |
|---|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon | 4.9289 mL | 0.0049289 L |
| 1 tablespoon | 14.787 mL | 0.014787 L |
| 1 fluid ounce | 29.574 mL | 0.029574 L |
| 1 cup | 236.59 mL | 0.23659 L |
| 1 pint | 473.18 mL | 0.47318 L |
| 1 quart | 946.35 mL | 0.94635 L |
| 1 gallon | 3785.4 mL | 3.7854 L |
Many recipe sites use a metric cup of 250 mL, which is slightly larger than the US cup (236.588 mL). For baking, weigh dry ingredients instead of measuring them by volume.
Litres and gallons
| Liter (L) | Gallon (US) (gal) |
|---|---|
| 1 L | 0.264172 gal |
| 5 L | 1.32086 gal |
| 10 L | 2.64172 gal |
| 20 L | 5.28344 gal |
| 50 L | 13.2086 gal |
| 100 L | 26.4172 gal |
| 1000 L | 264.172 gal |
Fuel in Pakistan is sold by the litre, while US fuel economy is quoted in miles per US gallon. A 40-litre petrol tank holds 10.57 US gallons.
Where each unit is used
- Millilitres and litres: drinks, medicine doses, cooking, fuel and water bottles.
- Cubic metres: water tanks, concrete, shipping containers and gas supply. 1 m³ holds 1,000 litres.
- Teaspoons, tablespoons and cups: American recipes. A US tablespoon is exactly 3 teaspoons.
- Gallons: US fuel economy and paint, and water tanks in some imported specifications.
- Cubic feet and inches: refrigerator capacity, engine displacement (cubic inches) and air-conditioning ducts. 1 ft³ is 28.3168 litres.
Common mistakes to avoid
- US gallon vs imperial gallon. The imperial gallon (UK) is 4.54609 L, about 20% larger than the US gallon (3.785 L). Fuel economy in "mpg" differs accordingly.
- Fluid ounce vs ounce of weight. A fluid ounce measures volume. 1 US fl oz of water weighs about 29.6 g, but honey or oil of the same volume weighs differently.
- Different "cups". US customary 236.6 mL, US legal (nutrition label) 240 mL, metric 250 mL, and a Japanese cup of 200 mL. State which cup a recipe uses.
- Medicine measures. Use the dosing device supplied with the medicine. Kitchen teaspoons are not accurate, and 5 mL (the usual medical teaspoon) differs slightly from the US customary teaspoon (4.9289 mL).
