Weight vs mass: what are you actually converting?
Strictly speaking, kilograms, pounds and grams measure mass (how much matter an object contains), while weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass. In everyday life, including on every kitchen, bathroom and shipping scale, "weight" means mass, and that is what this converter handles. The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. Since 20 May 2019 it has been defined by fixing the Planck constant at 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s, replacing the old platinum-iridium cylinder kept near Paris.
The exact conversion factors
The pound is defined in terms of the kilogram, so the main factor is exact, not rounded:
1 kg = 2.20462262185 lb
1 oz = 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g
1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg
How to convert kg to pounds
Multiply the kilograms by 2.20462. Example: 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.3236 lb.
How to convert pounds to kg
Multiply the pounds by 0.45359237, or divide by 2.20462. Example: 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.0389 kg.
Mental shortcut: to estimate pounds, double the kilograms and add 10% of the result (70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb, against the exact 154.3236 lb). To go back, halve the pounds and subtract 10% (150 lb → 75 − 7.5 = 67.5 kg).
Quick reference: kilograms to pounds
| Kilograms (kg) | Pounds (lb) | Pounds (lb) | Kilograms (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | 2.2046 lb | 5 lb | 2.268 kg |
| 5 kg | 11.0231 lb | 10 lb | 4.5359 kg |
| 10 kg | 22.0462 lb | 25 lb | 11.3398 kg |
| 20 kg | 44.0925 lb | 50 lb | 22.6796 kg |
| 25 kg | 55.1156 lb | 75 lb | 34.0194 kg |
| 50 kg | 110.2311 lb | 100 lb | 45.3592 kg |
| 75 kg | 165.3467 lb | 150 lb | 68.0389 kg |
| 100 kg | 220.4623 lb | 200 lb | 90.7185 kg |
Real-world situations where this conversion matters
- Air travel. Most economy tickets allow a 23 kg checked bag, which is 50.7063 lb, and many US airlines state it as 50 lb. Heavy-bag limits of 32 kg equal 70.5479 lb. A 7 kg cabin bag is 15.4324 lb. Weigh at home, because overweight fees are charged per kilogram or per pound and can cost more than the bag.
- Body weight and health. Doctors and gyms outside the US use kilograms, while US and many online sources use pounds, and the UK often uses stone. 70 kg is 154.3236 lb, or 11.0231 stone. For medication dosing, always follow the prescribed unit and ask a pharmacist rather than relying on a quick conversion.
- Cooking. Recipes written in ounces and pounds need grams on a metric scale: 8 oz is 226.7962 g and 1 lb is 453.5924 g. Weigh ingredients when you can. Measuring by weight is more accurate than by cup.
- Shipping and e-commerce. International couriers often bill by "chargeable weight". Mixing up lb and kg changes a quote by more than double.
- Gold and jewellery. In Pakistan, gold is priced per tola. 1 tola is about 11.6638 g, so a 10-tola bar is about 116.638 g. Always check which tola (and which purity) a jeweller quotes.
- Grain and farm produce. Crop rates in Pakistan are quoted per maund. 1 maund = 40 seer, about 37.3242 kg, so 100 kg of wheat is about 2.6792 maund.
Pakistani and South Asian weight units: tola, seer and maund
| Unit | In kilograms | In grams | In pounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tola | 0.0117 kg | 11.6638 g | 0.0257 lb |
| Seer (1/40 maund) | 0.9331 kg | 933.1 g | 2.0571 lb |
| Maund (40 seer) | 37.3242 kg | 37324.2 g | 82.2858 lb |
These units remain common in Pakistani bazaars, farming and the gold trade even though official measurement is metric. Local traders sometimes round them (for example a seer as "about 1 kg" or a maund as "about 40 kg"), so for contracts and price comparisons use the exact values above.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up ton types. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, a US (short) ton is 2,000 lb (907.1847 kg) and a UK (long) ton is 2,240 lb (1016.0469 kg). Freight documents must say which one is meant.
- Confusing ounces. The ounce here is a unit of weight. A fluid ounce measures volume, so 1 oz of honey and 1 fl oz of honey are not the same.
- Rounding too early. Use 2.20462, not 2.2, for large loads. At 1,000 kg, using 2.2 is off by about 4.6 lb.
- "lbs" vs "lb". Both are used. The standard symbol is "lb", from the Latin libra.
