How area conversion works

The square metre is the base unit. A unit of area is a length unit squared, so the area factor is the square of the length factor. For example, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² (exact).

Marla and kanal: Pakistani land units

In Pakistan, residential plots are sold in marla and kanal. The standard definition used in most of Punjab, Islamabad and many housing societies is:

Important: the marla is a traditional unit and its size can differ between regions, revenue records and developments. Some societies quote plots in square yards instead (for example 120, 240 or 500 yd²). Before paying, check the area stated in the registry or fard and the society's own definition, and confirm it against a measured survey.

Common mistakes to avoid

Squaring the length factor incorrectly. 1 m = 3.28084 ft, but 1 m² = 10.7639 ft² (3.28084²), not 3.28084 ft².
Mixing up the marla. A 5 marla plot is about 1,361 ft² at the standard marla of 272.25 ft². If a seller or society uses a different marla, the same "5 marla" plot will have a different area, so ask for the size in square feet.
Confusing area and length. "10 ft by 12 ft" is a 120 ft² room, not 22 ft².
Covered vs plot area. A house on a 10 marla plot has a different covered area on each floor, so ask for both numbers.
